FESTULOLIUM – A PROMISING FORAGE CROP IN THE PRE-CARPATHIAN REGION

Abstract

Festulolium is a perennial winter forage grass of the loosely tillering type, obtained through intergeneric hybridization of various Festuca and Lolium species. Depending on the combination of parental forms, its winter hardiness can range from high to moderate. Its value as a forage crop is determined by its biological characteristics, such as intensive tillering, regrowth ability, high response to fertilization, good palatability, significant productivity, high nutritional value, and long-term persistence in grass mixtures. This article analyzes the potential of Festulolium as a highly efficient forage crop. In particular, its biological traits, forage quality, and productivity for both biomass and seed production are examined. The research was conducted during 2022–2024 on sod-podzolic surface gleyed soils at the Institute of Agriculture of the Carpathian Region of NAAS, located in the village of Lishnya, Drohobych District, Lviv Region. The results showed that the highest productivity indicators were achieved by the variety Vѐtra, which yielded 37.9 t/ha of green mass, 6.7 t/ha of dry matter, and 0.458 t/ha of seed. These findings confirm the significant potential of Festulolium as a high-performance forage crop for further implementation in the agricultural sector
