Abstract

Barley is one of the key crops, which has a large share in the grain balance of Ukraine. The main share of crops is traditionally occupied by spring barley. Every year, about 75.0‒80.0 % of the harvested grain of the crop is used for fodder purposes. It should be noted that a characteristic feature of barley cultivation in Ukraine is the low level of yield. This is due to both subjective (violation of cultivation technology) and objective (global climate change) reasons. Recently, one of the main factors that hinders the increase in barley yield is increased soil acidity. Ways to solve this problem should be sought in breeding methods, namely by establishing genetic sources of valuable economic traits, which will later be used as source material in the creation of new high-yielding varieties with high genetic resistance to the main biotic and abiotic factors. The purpose of the study is to screen collection samples of two-row winter barley for grain yield and other valuable economic characteristics in conditions of increased soil acidity for their further involvement in breeding programs to create new high-yielding varieties. According to the results of the study, the best samples of different ecological and geographical origin were selected: Atol (UKR), Epos (UKR), Catherine (DEU) (ear length); Atol (UKR), Concord (UKR), Pascal (FRA) (number of grains in the ear); Hannelore (AUT), Mascara (FRA), Loreley (DEU), Atlant Myronivskyi (UKR), Catherine (DEU), Apollon (UKR), Alex (UKR) (weight of 1000 grains); Loreley (DEU), Marianne (FRA), Apollon (UKR), Monroe (AUS), Catherine (DEU) (yield). The indicated samples are recommended for further use in breeding practice.
