CHARACTERISTICS OF WINTER BARLEY VARIETIES OF THE INSTITUTE OF AGRICULTURE OF THE CARPATHIAN REGION OF NAAS

The characteristics of winter barley varieties, the originator of which is the Institute of Agriculture of the Carpathian Region of the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences, are given.
The breeders of the Institute of Agriculture of the Carpathian Region produced a fairly large list of winter barley varieties, in particular, the State Register of plant varieties suitable for distribution in Ukraine contains 4 varieties (Shirokolisty, Kormovyi, Dniter, Zbruch), 2 varieties are undergoing scientific and technical examination (Lvivskyi and Zahidnyi). These varieties are suitable for growing in the conditions of the Western region with an average seeding rate of 200 kg per hectare. The varieties are characterized by high grain yield (4-5 t/ha) under the given growing conditions, high resistance to lodging (7-8 points), and to diseases such as powdery mildew, rhynchosporiosis, dark brown leaf spot, dwarf rust.
The varieties also give a high yield of green, well-foliated mass with excellent fodder qualities in the period when other winter cereal crops age and lose their nutritional value, the newly created varieties of winter barley can be successfully used to supplement the green conveyor belt, to make silage and hay for livestock feeding. The high content of sugars in the green mass of winter barley successfully compensates for their low content in legumes, which makes it possible to create highly nutritious feed mixes with leguminous crops. Due to its high fodder value, barley grain is used for feeding all kinds of animals, as well as in the food industry
