Abstract

Objective – to conduct a comparative analysis of the productive traits of purebred Askanian meat-wool sheep with crossbred wool and their crossbreeds resulting from the introduction of Suffolk breed blood in the conditions of the Forest-Steppe zone of the Carpathian region. Research Methods – standard zootechnical and statistical methods. Purebred Askanian meat-wool ewes with crossbred wool, mated with purebred Askanian crossbred rams and rams of the ¾Suffolk (SF)¼ Precoce (P) genotype, did not show significant differences in reproductive performance. No statistically significant differences in live weight were observed between 3/8 Suffolk-blooded sheep and purebred Askanian crossbreds at 4-, 9-, 12-, 18-, and 27-months of age. Crossbred first-lambing ewes of the 3/8SF 1/8P 1/2AK genotype and purebred Askanian crossbreds did not differ significantly in reproductive indicators. However, lambs born to crossbred ewes had significantly higher live weights at weaning compared to their purebred counterparts. Crossbred rams of the 3/8SF 1/8P 1/2AK genotype demonstrated superior slaughter and meat qualities compared to purebred Askanian crossbreds ‒ they had higher slaughter weight, dressing percentage, and meat yield from the carcass (p < 0.05). Under the conditions of the Forest-Steppe zone of the Carpathian region, the use of the Suffolk blood infusion method in breeding Askanian meat-wool sheep with crossbred wool contributes to improved slaughter and meat traits in young animals marketed for slaughter within the year of birth.
